Knowledge and Risk Management
(Paper)
This very brief position paper
provides a summary of the thinking behind knowledge management
(KM) as a form of risk management and as a tool for enhancing
corporate accountability and governance. Chief among its
claims is that KM, as a profession, is uniquely qualified to
provide just the kind of quality control system required in business
for knowledge, so that we (a) can kill our worst ideas before
they kill us, even as we (b) take steps to enhance learning and
innovation as a basis for superior adaptive performance. Of
equal importance in this paper is the view that KM is emerging
as one of many management disciplines aimed at controlling and
mitigating corporate risk, and that because of this KM ought
to report to the board.
