The New KM's Three-Tier
Model (1 slide)
This slide contains one of
the most basic conceptual frameworks of key importance to the
New KM school of theory and practice: the New KM Three-Tier Model.
What it tries to do is illustrate the all-important distinctions
between Knowledge Management, Knowledge Processing, and Business
Processing behaviors in organizations. Its key message
is that the purpose of KM is to improve performance in business
(Business Processing and its outcomes) by enhancing an organization's
capacity to learn, innovate, and solve problems (Knowledge Processing
and its outcomes). It also illustrates the distinction between
KM and Knowledge Processing, two ideas in business that are constantly
being confused with one another. Knowledge Processing consists
of the individual and social processes in organizations that
account for knowledge production, sharing, and so forth. Knowledge
Management is a management discipline that seeks to enhance Knowledge
Processing. They are not the same thing. This model
was developed by Joseph M. Firestone of Executive Information
Systems, Inc. and Mark W. McElroy of Macroinnovation Associates,
LLC, both also closely affiliated with the Knowledge Management
Consortium International (KMCI).
